As of June 15, USDA's Farm Service Agency has processed $2.9 billion in payments to 220,280 producers through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program.
Total payments to non-specialty growers totals $758.4 million and there have been 112,410 applications. There have been 1,512 applications for specialty grower payments and $53.3. million has been paid. More than $1.4 billion has been paid to livestock producers and there have been 148,672 applications. There have been 12,084 applications for dairy aid and payments total more than $666.98 million.
The program provides financial assistance to producers who incurred a 5% or greater price decline due to COVID-19 or who had losses due to market supply chain disruptions.
Eligible commodities include:
- Non-specialty: Malting barley, canola, corn, upland cotton, millet, oats, soybeans, sorghum, sunflowers, durum wheat, and hard red spring wheat
- Wool
- Livestock: cattle, hogs, and sheep (lambs and yearlings only)
- Dairy
- Specialty crops:
- Apples, avocados, blueberries, cantaloupe, grapefruit, kiwifruit, lemons, oranges, papaya, peaches, pears, raspberries, strawberries, tangerines, tomatoes, watermelons
- Artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, sweet corn, cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, dry onions, green onions, peppers, potatoes, rhubarb, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes, taro
- Almonds, pecans, walnuts
- Other: Beans and mushrooms.
Program signup began May 26 and continues through Aug. 28.
Here's some information gleaned from the June 15 data:
- The top states for non-specialty payments are Iowa, $143.7 million; Illinois, $95.9 million, and Nebraska, $89.8 million.
- The top states for dairy payments are Wisconsin, $156.2 million; California, $87.5 million, and New York, $79.1 million.
- The states with more than 1,000 applications for dairy payments are Wisconsin with 2.975; New York with 1,467; Pennsylvania with 1,207 and Minnesota with 1,012.
- The top states for livestock payments are Iowa, $149.9 million; Kansas, $120.9 million; Nebraska, $113.4 million; Oklahoma, $104.5 million, and Texas, $100.6 million.
- The top states for specialty payments are Florida, $20.2 million; $15.0 million, California, and $2.2 million, New Mexico.
- Alaska has four applicants, but producers there haven't received any money yet.
- There have been two applications from Rhode Island, but they haven't received any money yet.
