The days of filling single bins with small-diameter grain augers are slipping away. Companies in the grain industry are responding with products more suited to filling larger, multiple bins with grain easily and quickly. At the same time, they’re taking steps to ensure that you can do it safely as well.
Related: These improvements help you handle grain better, more safely
For example, a short-line company, Leading Edge, is introducing Bin SumpPro, which is designed to break up caked grain that might clog up bin-unloading auger inlets and stop grain from flowing. This unit can be retrofitted to the existing bin sweeps currently installed in many bins.
If your problem is more centered around moving grain to the right bin, KSi offers a new overhead bin belt conveyor. Unique in many ways, it helps get grain to the right place and protects grain quality at the same time. It’s ideal for installations with multiple bins.
Brandt is building more than just an ordinary auger. The Canadian-based manufacturer introduces the Brandt U-Trough auger, which uses a larger auger and can move lots of bushels in a short time. Spokespersons say it’s also designed so that it doesn’t damage grain, delivering quality out of the spout that rivals the quality you can obtain with a belt conveyor.

U-TROUGH DESIGN RAISES BAR FOR AUGERS: The new Brandt U-Trough auger provides faster movement of corn or soybeans than a conventional auger. That’s the word from Brandt Agricultural Products. The Brandt 1345A HP auger uses 11-inch flighting and a funnel-shaped hopper to help keep the 13-inch tube full and move 9,000 bushels per hour. With the U-trough design, there is more capacity above the auger and less crop damage.
COMMERCIAL GRAIN HANDLING SWEEP: Brock has launched the 3500 Series Commercial Sweeps to give commercial grain elevators and large farm operators another tool to remove grain from storage bins. These sweeps work in bins up to 156 feet in diameter. The 3500 Series features an all-electric option that doesn't require hydraulics and it uses an explosion-proof, heavy-duty motor with V-belt drive and electrical collector ring for cord-free operation. The sweep sections eliminate the need for floor jacks, allowing for zero entry during bin unloading.
FILL MULTIPLE BINS WITH 1 CONVEYOR: KSi’s model 188DC overbin conveyor provides innovation over the company’s previous model. Spokespersons say it’s ideal for situations which don’t allow for conventional bin-fill setups. An 18-inch continuous, smooth belt coupled with custom K-valve discharge spouts moves seed or grain efficiently from one original location, and places it in the bin where it belongs. It can handle up to 4,500 bushels of soybeans per hour. The 188DC overbin conveyor is fully enclosed for weather and pest protection, and it features robust catwalks for safety.
