Flooding in at least eight states along the Mississippi River is the longest-lasting since the “Great Flood” of 1927, according to the National Weather Service. The 1927 flood remains the benchmark flood for the Mississippi River, USA Today reports.
According to a Bloomberg article, the U.S. Geological Service and NOAA are reporting that 415 river gauges in the United States show flood conditions as of 9:26 a.m. New York time on May 29.
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, officials are hoping that 70-year-old levees will hold back the swollen Arkansas River, which has risen to an all-time record high after weeks of heavy rain, according to Axios.
"We are planning for and preparing for the flood of record, and we think everybody along the Arkansas River corridor ought to be doing the same,"Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum told NBC News Tuesday.
